I Will Follow You Into the Dark
- Death Cab For Cuties; album: "Plans" (2005)
Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
I first thought this song is a happy song when i only paid attention to the guitar. well, after listening to it a few more times, and eventually listening to it on repeat while following through the lyrics, i think that it's a really sweet song, and it has this "hopeful" atmosphere to it.
Death Cab for Cutie - the most recent addition to my list of favourites. only got hooked to it now after my friend tried for so long to convince me that it's good. well, teo.hongyin, i am convinced, "converted" (into a fan), and thankful. especially for this particular song, it simply reminds me of an entire list of memories...things i've done in the past 6 years. not forgetting the emotions and thougts that came along with all those experiences.
hongyin was telling me about how she felt about the lyrics...that they were very sweet, and the style was like indirectly saying "i love you till the end of time" using simple actions that the composer has cleverly included all over the song. we were discussing about how sweet if two lovers can endure through thick and thin..like "follow you into the dark"..true love in other words. and then i thought..yeah..that's ideal if you have a partner and you really commit to the relationship with love and care no matter what happens, but sometimes if you reach a state where even if you really care for someone, that you are willing to extend your love and concern no matter where you are...circumstances might just prevent that opportunity of bliss to happen. that opportunity to have that person by your side to share your joys and sorrows. if you're not together with someone, doesn't mean that you cannot love that person. and if you still love him/her..i call it true love.
the more i listen to it, the more i'm captivated by the guitar.. probably a good song to learn, and hopefully i'll find someone that i can sing this to..
